Creative Commons, OER & Education

Posted on Apr 8, 2010 in Useful Links | 0 comments

Interesting news from the Creative Commons Blog today that they have produced an education-focussed area with its own landing page.

http://creativecommons.org/education

Its goal is to quickly introduce visitors to the vast number and range of Open Educational Resources available for use as well as the role of Creative Commons licenses in enabling OER to reach its potential.

The landing page also features a number of links for anyone who wants to learn more about OER & CC and/or wants to contribute their own knowledge. Most of those links point to the OER Portal/Project on their creative commons wiki.

Creative Commons in education is becoming increasingly important – as something we need to teach students about, and as something we as educators need to be aware of when using and distributing teaching materials. It will be interesting to keep an eye on the wiki to see what gets put onto it.

BBC General Election WordCloud

Posted on Apr 8, 2010 in Useful Links | 0 comments

For those of us in the UK, you may have noticed there’s an election going on. It seems like it’s been going on for months already….

Anyway, BBC Radio 5 Live is a talk (and sport) radio station – they’ve put together a cool application that will track all the topics that are being discussed on the air, and will display them as a word cloud. The more a topic is discussed, the bigger it is. You can scroll back through time and look at different days. You can even click on keywords and listen to clips from the shows related to that word.

This would be a cool thing to show students and use as a starting point for discussion. You can find the Word Cloud here.
