Investigate Genetics with Thingdom

Posted on Nov 27, 2010 in Interactive Whiteboards, Science Resources | 1 comment

The Science Museum in London have produced a fun game called Thingdom which is all about genetic inheritance and selective breeding.

Via a fun game you can adopt a “thing”, care for it and make baby things! Choose the mate carefully to obtain the desired characteristics in the offspring.

It’s fun, and demonstrates the idea of selective breeding quite nicely. Would be suitable for secondary science tutors looking for something different for Ks4 biology. The site also provides a guide for teachers, and an introductory video.

As an alternative interactive resource for looking at genetic crossing, try the Classical Genetics Simulator here: http://cgslab.com/demo/

  1. Love the Thingdom game! I am always on the lookout for new and interactive ways of teaching difficult subjects like genetics so will be recommending this one to teachers.

I sometimes find with games like these that students skip through the important science information to get back to the ‘fun’ bit. However, I think this one integrates the science well as they have to understand the genetics in order to choose the correct mate.
