Terrific Scientific is an ambitious new campaign from the BBC. Their goal is to inspire primary school pupils to discover their inner scientist.
Currently, fewer than 15% of 10-14 year olds aspire to pursue a career as a scientist, leaving the UK with a potential skills shortage.
The BBC have partnered with leading universities to create a series of child-friendly nationwide scientific investigations. The data gathered will be sent to the universities and will feed into real academic studies.
In the first phase, running from January to July 2017, classes will take part in five investigations at roughly monthly intervals. All investigations are rooted in topics covered by the science curricula in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. There will be more in-depth information on curriculum points in their teaching resources.
As well as guiding teachers and pupils through our investigations step by step, the Terrific Scientific website will be packed with lesson plans and ideas.
It’s a great idea, and there’s a stack of resources on the website already to help support the teaching of science in primary schools. Do go take a look and see what you think!
