YouTube Kids is an app specially made for children to enjoy. Think of it as a kid-friendly version of YouTube, designed to filter out any content unsuitable for young eyes. Parents can customize YouTube Kids for their kids’ age groups, whether they’re 8–12-year-olds, 4–8-year-olds, or even younger than 4.
Its extra safety features make YouTube Kids stand out from regular YouTube. Parents get more control to keep things secure, and there’s a team of real people who check videos to make sure they’re okay for kids. Plus, parents can find playlists with handpicked content created by these moderators, including kid-friendly YouTube channels.
However, even with all these safeguards, sometimes a few not-so-great videos can sneak through the filters. They might look kid-friendly but turn out not to be, slipping by until the human moderators spot them. And you’ll also find some super popular family vloggers who sometimes toe the line of what’s appropriate for kids, or whose content is causing concerns about child exploitation. Lastly, there are channels that can just be downright annoying for some viewers and you’d rather they weren’t watching it!
You can always view your child’s viewing history by clicking on the clock icon from the YouTube Kids home page. This will bring up the “Watch It Again” page with all the videos they’ve watched recently. You can also search for videos from the Search icon in the top right corner.
To block content using YouTube Kids from the home screen:
- Tap the 3 dots icon to the right of the video or channel name.
- Tap ‘Block this video’.
- Enter your custom passcode or solve the sum that appears.
To block a video or a whole channel when watching a video:
- Tap the 3 dots in the top right corner of the video.
- Tap BLOCK.
- Select ‘Block this video only,’ or ‘Block entire channel’.
- Tap BLOCK.
- Enter your custom passcode or solve the sum that appears.
