Science Skills is a free online teaching resource with six challenges drawn from the real-life context of BP’s business. Students can use video briefings, interactive experiments and information sheets to answer questions and ultimately solve the challenges.
Each challenge is based around a core topic from the Key Stage 3 and 4 curricula and the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence and helps to develop science skills.
The topics include:
- Speeding up a reaction
- Bioethanol
- Energy from Wind
- Energy from the Sun
- Crude Oil
- Energy from Fuel
The teachers version of the resource includes lesson plans, notes and other guidance. You need to register with the site to access the teacher area, but it is free. Students can access the main resources without a login.
This is a great resource for teaching various aspects of How Science Works along with important investigative skills. You can access it here.
In addition BP have also produced a “Science at Work” resource which provides real world science for 14–16 year olds. This free teaching resource comprises seven case studies from BP’s business, seven student challenges, a student sheet on science in the workplace, a short film about the work and skills of BP scientists, and teachers’ notes.
