Thanks to those who filled in my reader survey over the last few weeks. I’ve been crunching the numbers and have some initial figures to share on the over type of board used, and the software used from the 146 people who responded 🙂 Now this is just a bit of fun, and only really relates to my readership, but there’s some interesting figures.
Type of Whiteboard
Overall
Overall, the readers of this blog are mainly Smartboard users, with a sizeable chunk of Promethean as expected. The other brands of board are then in the minority with a few users of each. Will be interesting to see if some of the other solutions begin to make a dent in this over 2011.
UK / Ireland
In the UK/Ireland, there are slightly more readers who have Promethean boards to Smartboards with the other boards all making up a tiny proportion. This is in line with my experiences in UK schools where the main two boards I see are the “big two” of Smart and Promethean.
USA / Canada
In the USA and Canada it’s very much Smartboard dominating, with a quarter of readers Promethean users and then other boards/no boards making a significant chunk.
Australia / New Zealand
There were not many respondents from Australia and New Zealand, so the data is a little inconclusive, but it’s still Smart and Promethean dominating, with other baords also making a dent. These are the “regular” other boards so I am wondering if these are the cheaper boards from Japan/China that have been entering the market.
Type of Software – overall
I’ve not crunched this yet for countries but I would guess it’s in line with the board use above. Over 50% of the readers of this blog (who responded) use Smart Notebook with Promethean coming in second.
Phase of board use
I was interested to see what would happen here, since I have met teachers who consider Smart to be a Primary/Elementary product with Promethean being seen as something for high schools / colleges. Given the data below, there’s very little difference in phase with Smart being used more in both phases. This is therefore just reflecting the greater number of Smartboard users overall that responded. I’ll do some more crunching to see what that looks like in the UK another time.
The data makes for interesting reading, and pretty much reflects what I was expecting. I’ll continue to produce resources for Smart and Promethean in the main as that’s the bulk of whiteboards out there, or at least those of with whiteboards who took the time to fill the survey in.
