Spongelab is an interesting website set up by “a group of scientists, teachers, animators, artists, and programmers passionate about science education and with a desire to help foster learning through gaming”. The Spongelab site contains animations, videos, games, quizzes and lesson plans for science teachers and educators.
Spongelab are trying to foster a community feel, and encourage participation. For everything you do on the site, you are rewarded with experience points and credits. Experience points help you level-up and unlock some of the advanced features. Some of the content is premium, which means you can only access it using credits you have earned while you have been using the site. If you don’t have enough credits or do not want to spent the time, you can purchase a bank of credits using PayPal. You can also earn credits by submitting resources of your own such as lesson plans.
As an idea of costs – A 1000 credits will cost about £6. With that you can buy 5 simple premium interactives or one of their major games such as Build a Body or Build a Cell. You get 1000 credits just for registering, and other credits for completing a feedback survey.
It’s an interesting idea for a website – and there’s a lot of free content you can access without needing credits. Resources seem more suitable for Secondary teachers and possibly KS4/Ks5 – but take a look and see what you think.
