Timmy’s Number Tracing app featuring CBeebies favourite Timmy the lamb is aimed at helping pre-school children develop basic maths skills. The app is based on in-depth research into handwriting and the best way of teaching it. It features all the favourite characters from the hit CBeebies show Timmy Time. The app has been created by Aardman, the Oscar-winning creators of Wallace and Gromit in association with Pearson.
Using the app, children are asked to trace numbers on screen to help them learn to form numbers. When each task is completed correctly they are rewarded with a colourful, fun video from Timmy.
Jackie Cockle, Timmy Time creator, said: “Parents and guardians know that their toddlers are sometimes better at using their iPads and smartphones than they are. This app is perfect for helping them use those skills to learn numbers as well as have fun with Timmy and his friends.”
I had a play with the app today and I think it’s rather cute and very easy to use. Just tap a number to watch a fun Timmy Time animation, after which you are asked to write a number by tracing your finger on the iPad screen. Try to pass over each of the flashing red dots. If you do it right and complete the number, another fun animation will play. If not, then Osbourne the owl will pop up and you can start again.
The animations are cute, and very young children will find it quite engaging. At £1.50 it’s reasonably priced and that gets you numbers from 1 – 10. If your youngster keeps stealing your iPad then this is a good app to get them. Reception and SEN teachers will find it useful too.
