A slight departure as I’m not recommending just a single app, but several apps from the Field Studies Council. They have produced several handy apps for teachers who want to explore the wildlife on the school grounds or on a field trip.
The Tree Guide will help you quickly put a name to many UK trees. The handy filter system guides you through four basic leaf shapes, each quickly leading to a small number of choices. Choose the leaf that looks most similar, then call up more information including bark features, tree shape and fruit.
The Bug Guide will help you ideintify many of the common British invertebrates that you might find around the school grounds. There’s also a Sand Dunes guide too, for field trips.

If you are going on a minibeast hunt, or identifying trees around the school grounds, then take the ipads out with you and use the app to identify things out in the field. The pupils can also use the iPad camera to take photo/video of the things they found.
The Tree Guide is free on iPhone. All the other apps are 69p each. You can view all the iPad and iPhone apps by the Field Studies Council here.
