To make the most of the Internet, our students need to be prepared to navigate the online world. Be Internet Awesome is a set of resources from Google that teaches them the fundamentals of digital citizenship and safety so they can explore online with confidence.

Developed in collaboration with online safety experts such as the Family Online Safety Institute, the Internet Keep Safe Coalition and ConnectSafely, Be Internet Awesome focuses on five key lessons to help our students navigate the online world with confidence.

These are:

  • Be Internet Smart: Share with care
  • Be Internet Alert: Don’t fall for fake
  • Be Internet Strong: Secure your secrets
  • Be Internet Kind: It’s cool to be kind
  • Be Internet Brave: When in doubt, talk it out

To help students learn these lessons in a way that’s fun and immersive, Google have also created an interactive, online game called Interland. It’s free and web-based so it’s easily accessible by everyone on any device.

Be Internet Awesome Interland game

In this imaginary world of four lands, your students can answer questions to combat hackers, phishers, oversharers and bullies, whilst practicing the skills they need to be good digital citizens.

It’s a fun game, that can certainly have a role to play in quizzing children about the dangers they might face online. Would be good as a plenary task to summarise what they’ve learned in an e-safety lesson.

For teachers who want some ideas for teaching online safety in the classroom, the website contains a set of lesson plans and classroom activities that support the teaching of basic e-safety principles. The Be Internet Awesome curriculum gives educators the tools and methods they need to teach digital safety fundamentals. The materials developed by Google in partnership with iKeepSafe enable educators to bring the most critical teachings—and the excitement of Interland—into the classroom.

There’s also a set of resources that parents can download and use at home to continue the e-safety conversation with their children.
