Day 2:

  • Completed the printer frame assembly (following the instructions here)
  • Time for this step: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Total build time: 2 hour 50 minutes

This is the second stage of our 3D printer kit build. For the background to the project and details of the kit we are using, take a look at the introductory page here, or click here to see all our posts about this project.

Adding nuts and bolts ready for more support pieces.

3D Printer Build Day 2

Adding the corner supports and tightening them up. It’s important to check that the panels are completely flush, as otherwise it will be much harder to get everything aligned later on.

3D Printer Build Day 2

Adding supports for the top and base panels.

3D Printer Build Day 2

Preparing the mounts for the Z axis rods which will support the build platform and allow it to move up and down. These need very small nuts inserting into them, some fine tweezers are helpful here.

3D Printer Build Day 2

It’s a lot easier later in the build if the Z axis rods are used to line up the support pieces now. As there are a few very similar sized rods in the kit, it’s helpful to check the diameter to make sure we’re using the right ones. It’s also necessary to wear gloves when handling the rods to avoid corrosion. We used some disposable latex gloves we happened to have for chopping chilli!

3D Printer Build Day 2

Temporarily inserting the Z axis rods while fitting the mounts to get everything lined up correctly.

3D Printer Build Day 2

The basic frame structure is now complete and ready to start mounting the actual guts of the printer. It’s a good idea at this point to do a final check to make sure all the panels are still flush and square, and that everything is tightened up and there are no missing screws, as it will be trickier to correct any of these problems once all the various parts start being mounted into the printer.

3D Printer Build Day 2

See you in the next part, where we will be assembling the filament spool mounts.
