If you’re a teacher, you’re probably already aware of Twinkl. Their website has thousands of lesson resources to help a busy teacher out. But did you know that as well as their usual collection of worksheets, signs, labels and display materials the Twinkl website also has a library of over 300 3D and Augmented Reality models to explore?
There’s a wide range of models available, from human organs to hungry hippopotami, centipedes to cheetahs, catapults to Viking coinage and even the structure of Planet Earth, their ever-expanding library of models has something to inspire and educate all ages.
To use these models, you’ll need an iOS device running iOS 12 or later. Open Safari and head to this Augmented Reality page, click on the model you want to explore and choose Download. It’ll then open the model.
You’ll be able to choose from 3D mode, where you can just pan and zoom on a white background, or AR mode where, after waving your iPad around for a few seconds, the model will appear in the room right in front of you.
The models are good quality, but the ones I looked at (heart, lungs, dinosaurs) only showed a representation of the object. You could zoom in and rotate it around, but you couldn’t interact with it – it would have been good to click on parts of the model to remove the outer layer and look inside. A little animation would have been nice too! Would also have been good to see labels with names of different parts. The Download page for each resource does have additional information about the model, which is useful, such as this Sun model.
You’ll need a Twinkl account to download the models, but it’s free to register and access these models. There’s no models of Heather or Becky on here though 🙂
